Vienna at the turn of the 20th century embraced elegance, experimentation, and outright decadence in one of the most electric artistic climates of all time. Johann Strauss Jr.'s enchanting melodies, found most memorably in works like The Blue Danube Waltz and Die Fledermaus Overture, coexisted with Richard Strauss's witty and wry tone poem, Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks and his riot-inducing opera Salome, from which we will perform the searing orchestral showpiece, Dance of the Seven Veils. Samuel Barber's hauntingly beautiful and nostalgic Knoxville: Summer of 1915 transports you to a bygone Southern childhood. Duke Ellington's jazz-infused Harlem embodies the essence of an uptown Sunday stroll, experiencing the sights and sounds of the Harlem Renaissance. Béla Bartók, born in Hungary but having fled fascism for the States, honored both his new and old homelands in his magnificent and thrilling Concerto for Orchestra.
